Sitting on the shore of Lake Albert, Murchison Falls National Park is to put it quite
simply, 3,840 square kilometers of delightful wildlife experiences and iconic
landscapes, not least, the spectacular waterfalls formed as the fierce River Nile
violently forces its course through a narrow 8m cleft in the Rift Valley escarpment
and plunges into a frothing pool 43m below.
Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area then proceeds to deliver a sumptuous
serving of wildlife varieties sheltered within its lush Borassus grasslands and vast
savannah plains including towering Rothschild giraffes, giant elephants, antelopes,
lions, leopards, hyenas, and hippos and buffaloes which line the river banks of the
crocodile-infested Nile.
Deep inside Budongo Kaniyo Pabidi and Rabongo forests, endangered chimpanzees
find habitat, supplemented by over 550 bird species including majority of the
Albertine Rift area endemics. This makes chimpanzee tracking and birding some of
the most intense adventures within Uganda’s popular destination that covers the
scenic Bunyoro escarpment, the Northen end of the Albertine Rift Valley and merges
into the vast plains of Acholiland.
As the Victoria Nile snakes it way towards Lake Albert, it leaves in its trail a
memorable spectacle of wildlife bliss and breathtaking views including the 60km
stretch between Karuma Falls and Murchison Falls as the rushing and turbulent
torrent drops over 300 meters, spilling through ancient rocks and escarpments that
form the Western Rift Valley before slowly directing its course to feed into Lake
Albert.
The resulting experience includes a dramatic ‘Top of the falls’ experience as the
sights and sounds of nature are dominated by the Nile crashing through the wide
chasms down below while the entire voyage delivers unforgettable sightings of the
rare shoebill stork, plenty of riverside wildlife and up-close and personal encounters
with the dense crocodile population residing in the Nile’s waters.
With its developed road networks and highly skilled safari guides, Murchison Falls
National Park exceeds expectations, setting itself apart as Uganda’s ‘must visit’
destination, a delicate blend of Africa’s signature untamed wild juxtaposed against
scintillating views, exotic vegetation and a vibrant biodiversity worth of preservation
for generations to come.
